Wheeler Visits Pope on Friday

This week's roundup of high school sports has the latest news about East Cobb football, volleyball, softball and cross country teams.

Two East Cobb "derbys" are on tap when the high school football season resumes Friday.

Wheeler (1-0) will be at Pope (0-1) and Sprayberry (0-2) visits Lassiter (0-1) in games that kick off at 7:30 p.m. Kell (1-0) is at Woodstock and The Walker School (1-0) is at North Cobb Christian in games that also start at 7:30 p.m.

Walton (0-2) is off this week.

Last week, Walton and Lassiter both fell in the East Cobb-West Cobb doubleheader, while Pope suffered a 63-13 loss to Marietta. Sprayberry was routed by Kennesaw Mountain.

Wheeler, which was idle, routed Sprayberry in its season opener two weeks ago. Kell is No. 4 in this week's Score Atlanta Class 5A poll. Walker is ranked No. 9 in the Class A private school rankings.

The Pope community will celebrate the induction of two new members of its sports hall of fame on Friday. Former football player Tab Griffin and former soccer star KeLeigh Hudson will be honored.

More details from the MDJ.

Volleyball

Walton finally lost a match on Tuesday, to Johns Creek in a four-set match. But the No. 1 Lady Raiders haven't had much time to fret, as they compete Friday and Saturday in the Louisville Invite in Kentucky.

Next Tuesday, Walton plays host to Cherokee and No. 7 Roswell as play in Region 5-AAAAAA begins.

In the same region, Lassiter, which is 13-3, is competing in the Lovett Block Party this weekend. Wheeler was 5-4 before Thursday's tri-meet with Whitefield Academy and Campbell.

Walker, 7-3, has two matches on Saturday against Whitefield and King's Ridge Christian in the Pace Academy Playdate.

Softball

Lassiter, ranked No. 9 in Class 6A, had won eight games in a row before Thursday's Region 5-AAAAAA game with Cherokee. Wheeler is 2-5 and on Tuesday will play Walton, which was looking for its first win of the season.

The Lady Raiders were 0-10 before Thursday's game with Roswell, and they will play this weekend in Twin Creeks-Cherokee Invitational.

In Class 5A, Pope is ranked No. 5 with an 8-5 record and was playing Sequoyah Thursday. Kell, 4-3, played Osborne on Thursday, while Sprayberry 5-8, played Northview.

Walker is 2-8 and plays The Galloway School Saturday.

Cross Country

Walton, which has the No. 8 boys team in Class 6A, is competing Saturday with the girls team in the Marist Double Dip along with Pope, whose boys are ranked No. 8 in Class 5A.

Wheeler is in the Panther Invite at Starr's Mill, and Lassiter is running in the Covered Bridge Invitational in Roswell.

The Walker School is competing Saturday against Kennesaw Mountain High School.
