Walton Runners Earn State Track Titles

The Raiders finished fourth in the Class 6A team competition that ended Saturday.

Four Cobb County schools finished in the Top 10 in the Class AAAAAA field of the Georgia High School Association boys track and field meet, and five individual athletes earned state titles as the event concluded Saturday in Jefferson. 

Hillgrove of West Cobb was second in the 6A meet, scoring 43 points. Walton was fourth with 35 points, Campbell of Smyrna was fifth with 25 points and Marietta was 10th with 22.3 points. 

Two Walton runners also took home titles. On Friday night, Kenan Farmer won the 6A 3,200-meter run with a time of 9:11.38. In the 800 meters, Brian Sullivan, who is bound for the University of Georgia in the fall, was the winner with a time of 1:55.25.

Patrick Fleming of Pope was aiming for a second state title Saturday after on Thursday, but he came in third in the 800 meters in the 5A meet. The Greyhounds finished in 14th place in the 5A team standings. 

Mill Creek of Gwinnett County won the 6A team title with 59 points. McEachern and Harrison, both of West Cobb, came in 11th and 12th, respectively.

Campbell's Allen Frye won two state championships over the weekend, finishing first in the 110-meter hurdles (with a time of 14.46) and the 300-meter hurdles (38.74).

In the 100-meter dash, Marietta's KirVonte Benson took home the 6A crown in a time of 11.03, edging Hillgrove's Demetrius Duggans, who also finished second in the 200-meter run.

The girls state track and field meet begins Thursday in Albany. Walton is the defending 6A champion.
