Walton, Pope, Lassiter, Walker Volleyball Reach State

The first round of the GHSA tournaments begins on Thursday.

East Cobb will be well-represented again in the Georgia High School Association volleyball tournament that begins later this week.

Walton, aiming for a third consecutive state championship, won its fourth consecutive Area 4-AAAAAA title on Saturday, needing five sets to down Roswell in the area tournament at Milton.

The Lady Raiders, who are 40-6 on the season and ranked No. 1 in Class AAAAAA, will play host to Druid Hills on Thursday in the first round of the GHSA tournament.

Also advancing from the same area is Lassiter, which finished third over the weekend and also will play at home to start the state tournament. The Lady Trojans (30-21) will face Rockdale County.

In the Area 7AAAAA tournament, Pope finished second, losing in the finals to the hosts from Sequoyah.

But the Lady Greyhounds (27-24) earned the second seed from their area and will open the Class AAAAA tournament at home Thursday against Effingham County.

The Walker School, ranked No. 2 in Class A, won the Area 4-A tournament and also will be playing at home to open the state tournament. The Lady Wolverines (31-9) will play host to Pace Academy.

There's some extra incentive in store for any team that can get to the finals, which will be played Nov. 1-2 at Marietta High School.
