Sports Roundup: Walton Tops Lassiter in State Volleyball

Lassiter and Pope have reached the softball "Elite Eight;" Kell stays unbeaten in football.

The latest battle of East Cobb on the high school sports front took place on the volleyball courts Saturday.

Walton's dominance was too much for Lassiter, as the two-time defending state champion Lady Raiders advanced to the Georgia High School Association Class AAAAAA semifinals with a 25-16, 25-15, 25-11 victory.

Walton, which is 42-6 on the season and is ranked No. 1 in the state, will next play South Forsyth on Wednesday. Should Walton win that match, it would have close to a home-court advantage in the finals, which will be played at Marietta High School next Saturday.

Lassiter's season ends with a 32-22 record.

Another Lassiter girls' team is continuing on in state play, however, as the Lady Trojans will be competing later this week in the Class AAAAAA "Elite Eight" in Columbus.

Lassiter, which downed defending state champions Archer last week, will meet North Gwinnett Thursday in the double-elimination format.

In Class AAAAA, Pope returns to the Elite Eight for the second year in a row, and on Thursday will be facing Winder-Barrow. The Lady Greyhounds are the defending state runners-up.

Football

Kell remains undefeated in Class AAAAA after a 55-7 rout over Sprayberry on Friday, as the Longhorns (8-0) clinched a first-round bye in the Region 7-AAAAA playoffs.

But Walton's playoff hopes took a blow Friday as the Raiders lost to Milton 28-21. Walton is 4-4 and 3-2 in Region 5-AAAAAA, good for a second-place tie with two games to play.

Lassiter is tied for first with Etowah after defeating Wheeler 35-28. The Wildcats remain winless at the bottom of the region, 2-6 and 0-5.

Pope dropped its first region loss in 7-AAAAA subregion B in falling 35-9 to Riverwood. The Greyhounds are 3-5 and 2-1.

Sprayberry's loss to Kell dropped the Yellow Jackets to 1-7 and 0-3.

The Walker school is 4-4 and 2-3 in Region 6B-A after losing to Whitefield Academy 28-6.
