McEachern Wins, Wheeler, Whitefield Fall in Title Games

Lady Indians make county history in winning second state basketball title in three years, while foul trouble plagues Wildcats and Wolfpack in their championship game setbacks.

Cobb County teams went 1-for-3 in basketball state championship games on Saturday at the Macon Centreplex.

While the boys’ teams from Wheeler and Whitefield Academy came up one game short of cutting down the nets, the McEachern girls scored their second title in three seasons with an 81-62 victory over Archer in the Class AAAAAA championship.

The win made McEachern the first girls’ program in the county to win multiple state titles.

Caliya Robinson (20 points) and Te’a Cooper (17) led the way for the Lady Indians, who polished off a 28-2 season by winning their state playoff games by an average margin of 32.6 points per game. Read more on McEachern’s title game win here

In the boys AAAAAA title game, Wheeler fell 63-49 to Tift County in a contest that saw the Wildcats battle through early foul trouble.

Jaylen Brown led Wheeler, 28-5, with 17 points before fouling out and was one of four Wheeler players who exited the game early with five fouls. Read more on the championship game here

Like Wheeler, Whitefield Academy experienced foul trouble in its very chippy game versus Region 6 rival St. Francis in the Class A private school title game.

The Wolfpack had won the the season’s previous two meetings and led by nine at the break Saturday. But Whitefield missed its final eight shots from the field, including a pair of open looks from behind the arc in the final seconds, to fall 60-55.

Whitefield’s top player, Eric Lockett, scored just three points in only 14 minutes of action before fouling out in the fourth quarter. The Wolfpack, 23-7, was led by Courtney Alexander with 17 points and Berto Dryden with 16.

In addition to being out-rebounded by 20 in the game, the Whitefield was hurt by missing nine of 15 free throws in the second half. Read more on the title game here.
