Kell Family to Debut New Wheeler Field

What's happening on the East Cobb high school sports front, aside from Walton's season-opening game Saturday.

The widow and son of the late football coach Corky Kell will dedicate the new field at the stadium named after him prior to next Friday's season opening game. 

The Cobb County School District announced Friday that Carole Kell, a former English teacher at East Cobb Middle School, and Tain Kell, who played for his father at Wheeler and is now a Cobb Superior Court Judge, will lead the ribbon-cutting ceremonies prior to the Wildcats' home game with Pope. 

Also in attendance will be new Cobb school superintendent Michael Hinojosa, Cobb high school athletics director Steve Jones and East Cobb school board members Scott Sweeney and David Banks.

The pregame festivities begin at 7:15 p.m., with kickoff slated for 7:30 p.m. 

Pope, Walton Volleyball in Elite Tourney

Coming off state championships last season, the Pope and Walton volleyball teams are in action Saturday at the State Finalists Tournament at The Marist School. 

The East Cobb rivals will square off against one another at 12:30 Saturday in the first of their head-to-head matchups during the regular season.

They also will meet Sept. 1 at Pope. 

For Walton, it's the first of two trips to the DeKalb County school in a week. The Lady Raiders will compete against Blessed Trinity and Marist in a tri-meet on Tuesday. 

Pope's tri-meet on Tuesday is at River Ridge and also includes Woodstock.

Walton Raider Chaise is Saturday

What's known as the East Cobb 5K Road Race and the Walton Raider Chase takes place at 8 a.m. Saturday at Walton High School.

Although it's not an official high school event, the Raiders' teams are using it as a tuneup for their upcoming season.

On Friday The Marietta Daily Journal profiled the defending Class 5A Georgia state championship team that's aiming to repeat with many of its top competitors returning.
