Jones, Walton Run Over Brookwood

Even for those accustomed to watching Tyren Jones, his performance against Brookwood in the Corky Kell Classic was breathtaking. 

The senior running back romped for 305 yards and scored five touchdowns in the Georgia Dome Saturday night, as the Raiders dispatched their Gwinnett foes 35-24 to start the season in rollicking fashion. 

Three of Jones' scoring runs were 48 yards or more, including a 71-yard jaunt in the first quarter that came after Brookwood opened the scoring with a field goal. 

Although the Broncos edged closer several times later in the game, Walton never looked back.

Of Jones, Walton coach Rocky Hidalgo was quoted by the latter: 

“I’m going to tell you, anybody who’s got a major college tailback, especially one of his caliber, and they don’t give him the ball a bunch, they’re idiots. He’s going to get the football because he’s special, because it is what it is.”

On Twitter, in-game comments about Jones from the local high school football community included this observation from one of his rivals, Wheeler High School quarterback Elijah Staley:

"Tyren Jones . . . #1 running back in the nation?"

Although Jones to the University of Alabama earlier this year, that hasn't stopped other college football programs from continuing to recruit him.

In notable pursuit is the University of Georgia, where one of Jones' offensive linemen, Brandon Kublanow, is headed. 

In a Saturday afternoon blog post, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Michael Carvell talked to Jones about his recent unofficial visit to UGA.

"He's trying to get me to flip, but I'm pretty sure about my decision," Jones said, referring to Kublanow's recruiting efforts. 

He said he may take Kublanow with him on a visit to Tuscaloosa this fall.

High school players cannot sign scholarship commitments until February, so the fall remains as busy a time off the field as it is on it for high school prospects. 

This week, the Raiders will be fully focused on Friday's game at McEachern. The Indians lost 31-12 in the Corky Kell Classic Saturday by Grayson, which defeated Walton in last season's Class AAAAA state championship game.
