Ex-Walton Star Kicked Off Tech Team

Glen Rice Jr., already suspended from the Georgia Tech basketball team, has been dismissed after a shooting incident at an Atlanta night club.

Former basketball star Glen Rice Jr. won't be playing for Georgia Tech again.

Rice, Tech's leading scorer and who had been suspended for the last six games of the regular season and last weekend's ACC tournament at Philips Arena, was dismissed from the team on Tuesday after being charged for his involvement in a shooting incident at an Atlanta night club.

Said Tech head coach Brian Gregory in a prepared statement

"It's an honor and a privilege to represent Georgia Tech and be a part of this basketball program. There are certain standards that have to be met both on and off the court, and there has to be accountability when those standards aren't met. I'm disappointed that we have to take this action."

According to the release, Rice will stay in school through the spring semester for academic reasons.

Rice, a 6-foot-5 junior guard and the son of former Michigan and NBA player Glen Rice, appeared in 87 games and averaged 9.9 points in his abbreviated three-year career for the Yellow Jackets.

This season he played in only 21 games and was averaging 13 points a game. According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Rice was charged last week with permitting unlawful operation during an incident involving gunfire erupting from a Cadillac Escalade that was leaving the Halo Lounge in Midtown Atlanta.

The AJC report said Atlanta Police indicated that Rice was a passenger and London Warren, a Tech graduate assistant, was the driver. Warren, who was charged with DUI, was dismissed by Gregory on Monday, according to the AJC, which also reported that Warren played for Gregory at the University of Dayton.

The weapon was allegedly fired by a third person in the vehicle.

Gregory was hired from Dayton last spring by Tech athletics director Dan Radakovich, who lives in the Walton district and whose son, Grant, played for Raiders' state runner-up football team last season.

Rice was part of a standout recruiting class signed by Gregory's predecessor, Paul Hewitt, and last season was the top scorer and rebounder for the Yellow Jackets.

But he also was suspended last season by Hewitt for disciplinary reasons and was benched for three games by Gregory earlier this season before his latest suspension.

Rice finished his high school career as Walton's all-time leader in points (1,73) and assists (353). He was a two-time captain for the Raiders, an all-state peformer and a Top 50 senior nationally according to Rivals.com, a college sports recruiting service.
