East Cobb Spring Sports Update

Teams from Pope, Walton and Wheeler remain busy this week as more state champions will be determined.

With so many competitions involving boys and girls teams from , and in spring sports, we've got the latest updates on how they've been doing, and what's still to come.

Girls Tennis: Walton's Georgia High School Association all-sports record of 158 consecutive wins and eight straight Class AAAAA titles last Thursday, as the Lady Raiders fell to Roswell in the quarterfinals. The Pope girls reached the second round of the Class AAAA tournament, losing to Lambert by a 3-0 score last week.

Boys Tennis: Walton defeated Northview and Mill Creek last week to advance to the Class AAAAA semifinals and will play Region 5-AAAAA rival Milton on Tuesday. The Pope boys were ousted by Lambert in the second round of the Class AAAA tournament last week.

Baseball: Walton opened the Class AAAAA tournament by defeating Alpharetta last week and meets Camden County in a second-round series that begins on Tuesday. Pope advanced over Dunwoody in the Class AAAA playoffs and meets Northgate on Tuesday. 

Boys and Girls Golf: Both Walton teams are title contenders in the Class AAAAA tournaments that begin Monday near Augusta. The respective favorites in the boys and girls events, according to The Marietta Daily Journal, are Milton and Harrison.

Track and Field: The Walton girls barely edged M.L. King to win the Class AAAAA meet, thanks to in Saturday's sprint events. Walton and Wheeler will send athletes to the boys Class AAAAA meet that goes Thursday-Saturday in Albany. 

Girls Soccer: Walton was eliminated by Northview 2-0 in the first round of the Class AAAA tournament last week. Pope opened the Class AAAA tournament with a 9-0 win over Dunwoody and plays at McIntosh Wednesday in the second round. 

Boys Soccer: Walton opened defense of its Class AAAAA state title with an easy 7-0 over Northview and will play host to Kennesaw Mountain Tuesday. Wheeler, which edged West Forsyth 2-1, faces Camden County Tuesday. 

Girls Lacrosse: Walton plays host to Centennial Wednesday as the Class AAAAA tournament begins. Pope plays at Johns Creek Tuesday in the first round of the Class A-AAAA tournament. 

Boys Lacrosse: Walton, the defending Class AAAAA state champion, plays Milton Tuesday in the first round. Pope, last year's Class AAAA runner-up, is in action against Blessed Trinity on Wednesday.
