East Cobb Schools Advance in Volleyball Playoffs

Walton, Lassiter, Pope and Walker all will be in action Tuesday.

Many of the top seeds in the Georgia High School Association state volleyball tournament advanced out of the early stages last week, and will be at home when the playoffs resume Tuesday.

Two-time defending Class AAAAAA champion Walton will be among them when second round matches begin on the floors of the higher seeds. The No. 1 Lady Raiders (42-6), who routed Druid Hills last week, play host to Cobb rival McEachern, with the opening serve slated for 7 p.m.

Also playing at home Tuesday are the Lassiter Lady Trojans, who will face Centennial in a match starting at 6 p.m. Lassiter (31-21) downed Rockdale County Thursday in the first round.

In the Class AAAAA tournament, Pope (30-24), a former state champion, won its first round match against Effingham County but got a bad break in the draw. The Lady Greyhounds will play Tuesday at McIntosh (38-6), which is ranked No. 1 in the state.

The Walker School, ranked No. 2 in Class A, are 32-5 after defeating Pace Academy last week. On Tuesday, the Lady Wolverines will play host to Savannah Country Day at 5:15 p.m.

Tuesday's winners will advance to the quarterfinals on Saturday.

Before the state playoffs began, the top performers in Area 4-AAAAAA were announced.

Walton's Jessica Sloan was named player of the year, and her teammates Leah Jackson, Celeste Fitzgerald and Lindsay Seagraves joined her on the all-region team.

Lassiter's Libby Bochniak also was named to the all-region team.
