Walton Charter Renewal on Agenda

The Cobb Board of Education also will discuss a new principal for Hightower Trail Middle School on Wednesday.

The charter for is up for renewal, and it's one of the main items the Cobb Board of Education will be discussing Wednesday at its June work session. 

Cobb school superintendent Michael Hinojosa has recommended that the school board renew the charter, which began at Walton in 1998, for another five years. 

The school board also will discuss a number of personnel decisions, including a new principal for in East Cobb. Current principal Dr. Hilda Wilkins is retiring effective July 1.

So is David Addison, the school system's chief financial officer, who has proposed signficant spending and staff reductions to balance the district's budget, including for the fiscal year 2013 that begins next month.

The work session begins at 8:30 a.m. at the board room, 514 Glover Street, Marietta. The full agenda is attached as a PDF file.

The proposed Walton charter extension includes the overwhelming approval of the school's teachers, staff, parents and students, according to The Marietta Daily Journal. 

Hinojosa's recommendation against granting a charter to the proposed Smyrna Academy of Excellence figures to be the most controversial item on the agenda, and has already generated in the community. 

The final school board decisions on these and other matters are scheduled for its June 28 business meeting.
