Tritt Named Blue Ribbon School

The East Cobb school was one of four in Cobb to earn the distinction from the U.S. Department of Education.

East Cobb's Tritt Elementary School is one of eight in Georgia to make the 2013 list of Blue Ribbon Schools announced Tuesday by the U.S. Department of Education.

A total of 286 schools nationwide received the designation, which is made based on a school's overall academic excellence or progress in improving academic achievement.

The Cobb County School District said that Tritt's status as an "exemplary high performing school" is the result of being ranked in the top 15 percent in Georgia in reading and math test scores.

For the last two years, 100 percent of Tritt's students have met or exceeded reading expectations on the Georgia Criterion-Referenced Competency Test and more than 95 percent met or exceeded goals in math.

"Our school has made a collaborative effort to increase the rigor and relevance in our instruction and in the activities we give our students," Tritt principal Karen Frost said in a statement issued by the CCSD. "For the past few years, we have focused on problem solving to help our students learn to think critically and look for different ways to find answers."

The other schools in Cobb that were named on the Blue Ribbon list include Fair Oaks Elementary, the Marietta Center for Advanced Academics and St. Catherine of Siena Catholic in Kennesaw.

The schools will be formally honored in Washington Nov. 18-19.

Tritt becomes the 15th East Cobb school to earn Blue Ribbon status. Here are previous winners.
