Sprayberry Grad Gets Scholarship

Three recent Cobb County high school graduates who excelled in the classroom and the community despite personal adversity have been rewarded with $5,000 scholarships from the Horatio Alger Association.

Sprayberry High School's Beth Hanawalt (third from the right in the photo) is among the state's 50 scholarship recipients, according to a list posted on the association's website.

The qualify for the scholarship, applicants must demonstrate:

• a strong commitment to pursuing and completing a bachelor's degree at an accredited institution located in the United States;
• a critical financial need ($50,000 or less adjusted gross income per family is preferred);
• involvement in school and community;
• integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity; and
• a minimum grade point average of 2.0.

South Cobb High School's Halimo Hassen and Nnennia Mazagwu are the other winners from Cobb. This isn't the first scholarship win for Hassen and Mazagwu. They recently received the 2013 Gates Millennium Scholarship, a good-through-college scholarship funded by a $1.6 billion grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
