Principal Openings On Cobb Board Agenda

Two elementary schools in West Cobb are without principals as the school year is underway.

Filling two principal openings at elementary schools in West Cobb are among the agenda items at the Cobb Board of Education meeting Thursday night.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the headquarters, 514 Glover Street in Marietta. A public comment period will take place near the start of the meeting.

Vaughan Elementary School in Powder Springs has been without a principal since June, when Dr. Barbara Swinney was named area assistant superintendent for leadership and learning for the district.

Dowell Elementary School, located on West Sandtown Road, is also without a principal after the recent resignation of Janis Komara, who had been on the job for less than two years.

The Marietta Daily Journal quoted school district spokesman Jay Dillon as saying that Komara's departure is "a personnel matter," but he would not elaborate.

Retired area assistant superintendent Alice Stouder will serve as the interim principal, and her name has been posted on the school's website.

The school board also will consider the following items:

  • Approving $288,000 in vocational construction-related grants for labs at Garrett Middle School, North Cobb High School and Pebblebrook High School.
  • Approving around $90,000 in construction change orders for ongoing renovation projects at Mableton Elementary School and Wheeler High School.

The board will recognize Michael Graham, the winner of a summer school bus driver skills competition. He drives routes serving several East Cobb schools, according to the MDJ.

The board also will hear a presentation about proposed revisions to two sections of the board policy manual that cover a wide range of operating procedures.
