Mountain View Town Hall Rescheduled

Parents' groups lobbying for a new school will hold a public meeting on Nov. 12.

A town hall meeting arranged by parents of students at Mountain View Elementary School has been rescheduled.

The meeting, which was originally slated for Monday, Nov. 11, has been postponed a day, and will begin at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at the school, located at 3448 Sandy Plains Road.

Karin DeAmicis of the Rebuild Mountain View campaign said the meeting date was moved to avoid a scheduling conflict with another school meeting.

An informational meeting on school funding issues has been scheduled for Walton High School on Nov. 11.

Mountain View parents and organizations -- including the PTA, School Council and fundraising foundation -- have been vocal in lobbying for a replacement school to be funded with money from the upcoming Cobb Education SPLOST IV.

They have spoken out at Cobb Board of Education meetings, complaining that the 1960s-era facility is outdated and moldy, causes health problems and is located in a busy commercial corridor that poses traffic and safety concerns.

Several school board members have visited Mountain View in recent weeks. Among the guest speakers at the November meeting are school board member David Banks, who represents the Mountain View school community, and Cobb District 3 Commissioner JoAnn Birrell.

The school board will be choosing two elementary schools for replacement projects. Also lobbying heavily are parents at Brumby Elementary in East Cobb and Harmony Leland Elementary in Mableton.

Last week the school board was presented six different options to consider by Cobb County School District staff, and Mountain View, Brumby and Harmony Leland are among them.
