Rockin' Robots Learn Food Safety

Faith Lutheran School's robotics students are taking on a new project this school year.

The kids of Georgia’s First LEGO League (FLL) are taking on a new topic this year, FOOD FACTOR 2011, and the children at Faith Lutheran School have embraced this topic and challenge.

FLL is an international robotics program for nine- to 16-year-olds designed to get children excited about science and technology. Faith has a returning award winning team, the Rockin’ Robots, a new FLL team called the Robo Eagles, along with two Junior First Lego League teams.

The Faith Lutheran FLL teams invited a Cobb and Douglas Public Health inspector to speak at their school in order to learn more about how how Cobb works to prevent food-related illnesses and to show children how to keep food safe.

Inspector Jennifer Mesta taught the children ways to prepare, cook, store and even serve food. The children were also asked to check the health scores of restaurants they frequent and be their own detective finding out why they scored as theydid.

When asked, “What can a child do about food safety?,” Mesta said, “The best thing a child or an adult can do is to practice good food management skills. Have a clean surface, clean tools, separate your meats and veggies, cook to the proper temperature, and then store appropriately.”

The Rockin’ Robots made it all the way to state last year and were able to take home a 1st place project award for “Innovative Solutions Award.” This year Faith Lutheran will be sending four teams to the FLL qualifiers.
