East Cobb Schools Compete in 'Walk to School' Challenge

Students from Mt. Bethel Elementary have accepted a challenge from Sope Creek Elementary.

It's going to be Mt. Bethel Elementary School vs. Sope Creek Elementary School next Wednesday for some East Cobb bragging rights.

Students, teachers, staff and parents at the two schools will be doing more than observing National Walk to School Day, which coincides with the resumption of classes following the Cobb County School District's break.

They'll be having a friendly competition of sorts to see which school will have more walkers.

Sope Creek laid down the challenge, and Mt. Bethel responded with brio, as students at both schools produced the videos embedded here (courtesy Cobb County School District) to ratchet up the fun.

Adding some spice to the challenge is the fact that Jessica Appleyard, the new principal at Mt. Bethel, was most recently an assistant principal at Sope Creek.

Mt. Bethel students will gather in the Publix parking lot on Woodlawn at 7 a.m. Wednesday to walk in unison; Sope Creek parents were told this week to "pass the word to all your neighbors to get up, strap on your walking shoes, and get moving."

We'll report on the challenge results as soon as they are tabulated.
