East Cobb Schools Prep for Reading Bowl

Students from ranging from Walton High to Brumby Elementary will be in action next weekend.

A total of 16 schools from East Cobb will be among the 53 schools represented next Saturday at the 7th annual Cobb County School District Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl

The fast-paced academic competition, which uses a game show-style buzzer system to answer questions about books, is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Awtrey Middle School in Kennesaw.

Winning teams advance to the regional bowl Feb. 1, heading towards the ultimate challenge of the state final in March at the University of Georgia.

The Reading Bowl was initiated by its namesake Helen Ruffin, a now-retired DeKalb County media specialist, who was looking for a way to motivate the students at her school to read more.

  • Middle: Dodgen, East Cobb, Hightower, Mabry McCleskey.
