Drive Begins to Help Wheeler/ECMS Fire Victims

A family of students at both schools lost everything in a Thanksgiving Day blaze.

The Wheeler High and East Cobb Middle School communities are being asked to help a family of students at both schools left homeless by a Thanksgiving Day apartment fire.

The family fled their unit at the Mission Galleria complex in Smyrna just before the building was destroyed.

Nobody was injured, but eight families were left homeless and lost all their possessions. Christian Rosario, a Wheeler freshman and member of the marching band, couldn't salvage his clarinet, although a local couple donated a new instrument

Officials at both schools have sent out notices asking for donations of household goods for the family, which was moving into new living quarters on Friday.

Donations can be delivered to East Cobb Middle School (380 Holt Road) or made online by signing up via e-mail at the VolunteerSpot link. Please sign up for "After the Fire: Items Needed."

Larger items, such as mattresses, should be delivered to the apartment. To make delivery arrangements for those items, and for more information about the donation drive, please contact Kelly Gutting at 770-578-7280 or Kathleen Gonglach at 770-578-2740 Ext. 231.
