Here's what you need to know to start Aug. 10 in East Cobb.

1. Today’s weather is kind of boring after the flashes of storms and extreme heat indexes of the past week. The National Weather Service says it will be sunny with a high of 93 and an overnight low of about 67. There’s a 20 percent chance of rain after 2 a.m. Thursday.

2. The Cobb Board of Education is meeting this morning, and the overhaul is a big issue because the lowest bid is $2.6 million over the budget. Even though the trailers are in place, we’re hearing buzz that the project timeline could be extended. East Cobb Patch will have the details from the 8:30 a.m. meeting at the district’s Central Office on Glover Street.

3. Meanwhile, are rolling across East Cobb. and got things started Tuesday, and Wheeler and start their two-day orientation programs today. Wheeler freshmen will experience Wildcat Daze from 6 to 8 tonight; Walton 10th-, 11th- and 12th-graders will have orientation in shifts from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Wheeler upperclassmen will have their turn Thursday night, and the Walton freshmen will get their first Raider experience Thursday morning. Also, Walton has a football scrimmage at 6 p.m. today; admission is $5.

4. If a scrimmage tonight isn’t enough to feed your hunger for high school football, you can get a taste of the upcoming season from 7:45 to 9 at with the Cobb Chamber of Commerce’s East Cobb Area Council. The head coaches from Pope, Wheeler and Walton are among the scheduled speakers. Admission at the door is $25 for Chamber members, $35 for others.

5. You also can catch up on a former East Cobb football standout without leaving home. The Marietta Daily Journal has a nice feature this morning on Wheeler alum Rashad Stewart, who now is playing for Bill Curry at Georgia State after stints at Drake and Louisville.
