Senior Complex Proposed for East Cobb

The brother and son of U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson want to build nearly 1,000 units on the Tritt land next to East Cobb Park.

A proposed senior living facility adjacent to East Cobb Park would carry a very familiar name.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Wednesday that a development company run by the brother and son of U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson -- a longtime East Cobb resident -- has filed a request to rezone 54 acres of land for a community dubbed Isakson Living East Cobb.

The property, former farm land owned by Wylene Tritt, the aunt of country music star Travis Tritt, is located on Roswell Road near the intersection of Providence Road West. It's also across Roswell Road from WellStar's East Cobb Health Park that will soon be under construction.

Isakson Living East Cobb would be a dense project, with 987 residential units, all but 150 of them for independent living, and built on 32 of the 54 acres. The design plan calls for four-story buildings, minimal surface parking and sidewalks that the developer says will evoke "a small town feel."

The $200 million complex also would include dining and entertainment options and other activities. Residential parking would be located underground.

Isakson Living East Cobb's proposal also calls for the preservation of 40 percent of existing trees as buffers to the surrounding community, which includes the Glenside subdivision to the east. The estimated traffic would be 2,000 trips a day.

The proposal calls for an initial phase completion by 2016, with an eventual build-out over 10 years, according to the AJC report.

The Isakson Living plan is tentatively scheduled to go before the Cobb Planning Commission on Aug. 6 and before the Cobb Board of Commissioners on Aug. 20, but it could be delayed because it needs additional approval due to its size, the AJC also reported.

The requested zoning would be for Continuing Care Retirement Community status.

The developers are Andy Isakson, the senator's brother, and Kevin Isakson, the senator's son, who was raised and still lives in East Cobb. Their firm completed a similiar complex called Park Springs, located near Stone Mountain Park.

Isakson Living East Cobb would be the latest entry into a desirable East Cobb market for senior living. Last year, Sterling Estates opened on Lower Roswell Road.

Located next to the Kings Cove subdivision, it features around 100 living suites and was the first senior complex approved for rezoning by Cobb County in a residential neighborhood.
