Traffic Study: New Braves Stadium Needs Better, Safer Pedestrian Access

Scope and funding commitment for a proposed pedestrian/transit bridge across I-285 that would reduce travel distances from off-site parking to the proposed stadium has not been developed according to the study.

A traffic study from the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority indicates that better and safer pedestrian access is needed at the site of the new Cobb County Atlanta Braves stadium.

As The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports, the report “suggested that pedestrian accommodations be added along all sides of the stadium and an adjacent mixed-use development, on the site’s internal roads, and on roads leading from all the proposed off-site parking areas.”

The $622 million stadium project is set to be home to the baseball franchise beginning with the 2017 season.

A planned pedestrian and transit bridge across I-285 linking the stadium site with the Cobb Galleria area would reduce walking distances.

“The proposed pedestrian/transit bridge would reduce pedestrian travel distances from off-site parking to the proposed stadium,” reads the GRTA recommendations. “However, the scope and funding commitment has not been developed.”

The Marietta Daily Journal reports that Cobb Commission Chairman Tim Lee said a final plan for the bridge has not been set, but that project will “absolutely” open in 2017.

“It’s an important component to connect the inside of the perimeter to the outside of the perimeter and we’re fully committed to making that happen,” Lee told the Cobb news outlet.
