Secure DLs, IDs to be Required

East Cobb residents should be prepared to provide additional documents when renewing or applying for state driver's licenses effective July 1.

Renewing your Driver's License after July 1 will be a little more involved and probably take more time.

The state of Georgia has adopted the federal Real ID Act of 2005 recommendations of the 911 Commission which prohibits the federal government from accepting driver's licenses or IDs issued by non-compliant states to board a commercial flight or enter a federal building.

So to be compliant with those regulations, beginning July 1, 2012, the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) will begin issuing new Secure IDs to individuals with the correct documentation.

Whether you are seeking a new license or ID in Georgia or renewing or replacing an existing license or ID, you'll need to bring a few more pieces of documentation to DDS when you come. The licenses will not be available immediately as in the past. Usually you will receive a paper license and then a permanent license a few days later.

When you apply, you must bring original or certified documents that prove your identity, social security number and residential address.

These required documents will include the following:

  • At least one (1) document to prove your Primary Identity, and
  • At least one (1) document to prove your Social Security Number, and
  • At least two (2) documents to prove your Residential Address.

If you have questions, the DDS has created a checklist wizard to help you as well as providing answers to Frequently Asked Questions on its website.

I'll be there; rabbi Alper should be good (his You Tube videos are entertaining). CongratulationsRead More to Henry Hene and the Habitat coalition for doing such wonderful work and promoting "We Build to Coexist, We Coexist to Build." Congratulations to Addie and Harvey Schneider -- both are the definition of mensch.

Hurray for the "old school" which just means having a few manners. Ms. Smith alwaysRead More seems to present three facts after what seems to be extensive research. People can disagree without being rude or spouting half truths. I'm glad we still have some ethical and honest people in our midst.
