No Parking Zone Sought for Club Valley Drive

Residents organized a petition drive to address traffic issues stemming from Wheeler High School construction.

The ongoing reconstruction project at Wheeler High School has caused a number of traffic and parking headaches in nearby residential areas.

Now some residents are asking the Cobb Board of Commissioners to help solve one of their biggest concerns.

Homeowners on Club Valley Drive in the Beverly Hills Estates subdvision have petitioned the county to designate both sides of the entire street as a no parking zone during weekdays.

The matter is scheduled for action during the commission's business meeting Tuesday night. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the 2nd floor board room of the BOC building, 100 Cherokee Street, Marietta.

The Cobb Department of Transportation is recommending that the commission post "no parking" signs that will be in effect Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

During the past school year, Club Valley Drive has been used as the primary detour for Wheeler bus traffic, and it is expected to do so again for the 2013-14 school year that begins in August.

Club Valley Drive feeds into East Cobb Middle School, which is located across the street from Wheeler on Holt Road.

Because student and staff parking is limited at Wheeler, Club Valley and other streets located near both schools have been used for parking.

Club Valley residents began their petition drive in January, and Cobb officials said that last month they reached the threshold of getting signatures from 75 percent of eligible property owners to prompt county action.

The first phase of the $17 million Wheeler project has been in progress during the last school year, with final completion expected next year.

In other business scheduled for Tuesday, the commission is expected to act on the following East Cobb-area projects on the 2011 Cobb SPLOST list:

  • Spending $728,189 for sidewalk construction and safety improvements on Shallowford Road, between Tanbark Place and Blackwell Road. The additional sidewalks near Nicholson Elementary School and McCleskey Middle School;
  • Spending $118,000 for drainage system repairs on Robin Hood Place;
  • Approving the ranking of the three most qualified firms for the design of safety and other improvements on Sandy Plains Road, from Kinjac Drive to Ebenezer Road;
  • To approve a $632,730 contract with Waterworks Atlanta, Inc. for demolishing the existing swimming pool bath house building at Sewell Park and building a replacement and making other improvements, including a new locker room.
