Mt. Bethel Zoning Gets Initial OK

The Christian Academy's plans for a high school on Post Oak Tritt Road go before the Cobb Board of Commissioners Nov. 19.

The Cobb Planning Commission voted 5-0 on Tuesday to recommend approval of Mt. Bethel Christian Academy's special land use permit request for a high school on Post Oak Tritt Road.

Mt. Bethel is under contract to purchase the 33-acre Shirley Blumenthal Park from the Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta pending rezoning.

The land, located at the northwest corner of Post Oak Tritt and Holly Springs Road, is zoned residential (R-20) but a special land use permit is required to operate a school.

Mt. Bethel's plans were presented to the public at Commissioner JoAnn Birrell's town hall meeting last month. Some residents were concerned about traffic at a busy intersection.

A citizen who said he wasn't opposed to the Mt. Bethel project echoed those concerns to the planning commission.

Christi Trombetti, Birrell's appointee to the planning commission, said while Mt. Bethel's request hasn't generated much controversy, "it's still a big application."

Mt. Bethel has included several stipulations in its request to preserve present buffering along the northern and western property lines that border residential neighborhoods, and to build a sidewalk on Post Oak Tritt.

The planning commission's recommendation will be forwarded to the Cobb Board of Commissioners, which is scheduled to take action Nov. 19.
