will be stepping down at the end of September.
According to the Marietta Daily Journal, Kreeger has announced his resignation, effective Sept. 30. The newspaper reports that Kreeger wrote a letter to Gov. Nathan Deal asking for an appointment to senior judge status. As a senior judge, Kreeger would hear cases in various circuits, including Cobb.
"It has been my privilege to serve on the Cobb Superior Court bench for 28 years and prior to that for 5 1/2 years in the State Court of Cobb County," Kreeger wrote in his letter to Deal. "It has also been my pleasure to preside over the Cobb County Adult Drug Court for the last 10 years. Thank you very much for your consideration."
The Judicial Nominating Committee will take applications for Kreeger's position and then recommend its top picks to the governor. The person appointed will finish out Kreeger's unexpired term, which ends Dec. 31, 2014.
According to the newspaper, the resident presides over Cobb County Superior Court Drug Treatment Court and chairs the Judicial Council of Georgia’s Standing Committee on Drug Treatment Courts.
Cobb County is losing a second Superior Court judge this year. Judge Dorothy Robinson also is stepping down. Three people have qualified to run for her seat: State Court Judge Roland Castellanos; Van Pearlberg, a former councilman; and Juvenile Court Judge Greg Poole.
