East Cobb Surgical Center Approved by Supreme Court

WellStar's East Cobb Health Park has obtained approval from the high court to add an outpatient surgery center to its multi-million dollar complex.

When the WellStar East Cobb Health Park on Roswell Road opens its doors in September, the 162,000 sq. ft. complex will come complete with an outpatient surgery center thanks to a decision by the Georgia Supreme Court.

The court ruled in favor of WellStar, which had been taken to court by Northside Hospital because the proposed surgical center partially shared the coverage area of a Northside facility.

Northside contended that the law pertaining to applications for new surgery centers was unconstitutionally vague, but the Supreme court decided unanimously that the law was clear enough to allow construction of WellStar's surgical complex.

The $73 million WellStar East Cobb Health Park will feature seven exam rooms, two observation rooms, 20 physicians, and will offer outpatient surgery, ambulatory surgery, urgent care, and regular physician checkups. Overnight stays will not be covered by the facility.

WellStar's President and COO Candice Saunders said in a statement that the facility would continue the company's mission of bringing top-flight medical coverage to northwest Georgia.
