Cobb, WellStar Sign Partnership Agreement

The agreement is for a senior community clinic at the Senior Wellness Center, which is currently under construction.

The and officials celebrated the establishment of a senior community clinic will sign a partnership agreement today at the site of the campus in Powder Springs Station.

The clinic will be an important part of the Senior Wellness Center, currently under construction at 1150 Powder Springs St. and slated to open in late August. The clinic will provide free, preventive and chronic healthcare services for eligible, low-income seniors who are uninsured Cobb residents aged 55 to 64. The clinic will also concentrate on services that are not eligible for Medicaid or Medicare, such as vision and hearing screenings. WellStar will supply all equipment, staff and operational support for the senior wellness clinic.

“This new partnership is an exciting opportunity for WellStar and other non-profit community programs to work together for a common goal,” said Pam Breeden, director of Cobb Senior Services. “Through medical science we are all living longer and the Wellness Center will offer seniors age 55 or better a chance to improve the quality of their retirement years.”

In addition to the clinic, the center will offer nutrition education, exercise classes, seminars on mental health issues and opportunities for socialization through the performing and visual arts.

“The establishment of this center is a unique partnership between WellStar and Cobb County, and one of which I am proud,” said Reynold J. Jennings, president and CEO of WellStar. “Health systems across the country need to step up activities to reduce the health and economic impact of chronic – but common – conditions and focus on prevention.”

Cobb County Commission Chairman Tim Lee said this is a "big step foward" for the entire community, not just the senior population.

“It will help save taxpayers money, provide additional services and give the surrounding business community an economic boost,” Lee said.

Most of the funding for the construction of the Wellness Center is provided by federal funds. Renovations of the building, which qualify for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification, were also partially funded through the 2011 Special Purpose Local Option Sales. All renovations are being done by the Cobb Property Management Department.
