No One Hurt in Apartment Standoff

A man who reportedly had a shotgun surrenders about 3 a.m. at the Columns at Akers Mill.

A lower East Cobb police standoff ended peacefully early today when a gunman surrendered at the Columns at Akers Mill apartment complex.

Cobb police responded to the Akers Mill Road complex after a report of a domestic dispute about 8 p.m., WSB-TV, CBS Atlanta and Fox 5 said. TV footage showed a massive police presence with at least half a dozen vehicles.

Neighbors saw the man, whose name is not yet available, walking around Akers Mill Road with a shotgun before police arrived, WSB reported.

Police evacuated Columns residents while officers negotiated with the man, who barricaded himself inside his apartment, WSB said. The standoff lasted about seven hours, ending about 3 a.m., CBS Atlanta said.

The man had a 4-year-old child and a woman with him in the apartment, Fox 5 reported. No one was hurt.

WSB said the charges against the man include cruelty to children.

The apartment complex is just inside the Perimeter and west of the Chattahoochee River.
