Man Charged in I-75 Crash That Killed East Cobb Resident

Gregory Millsaps died Nov. 14 in an eight-vehicle accident near Acworth.

A Gwinnett County man turned himself in Friday after being wanted for causing a fiery accident on Interstate 75 in Cobb County last month that killed two people, including one from East Cobb.

Cobb Police Sgt. Dana Pierce said Vahid Husic, 40, of Lawrenceville, has been charged with two counts of first-degree vehicular homicide, reckless driving and following too closely.

Husic is being held at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center without bond, Pierce said.

Husic was identified as the driver of a white 2005 Volvo tractor-trailer who triggered an eight-vehicle accident on I-75 near the Hickory Grove Road overpass in Acworth on Nov. 14.

Police said while traffic in the northbound lanes was slow due to road construction, the tractor-trailer slammed into a BMW, which then struck a minivan. All three vehicles collided with five other vehicles in an accident that spread out over four lanes of traffic and two emergency lanes.

The BMW caught fire, killing the driver, 47-year-old Gregory Millsaps of East Cobb, whose identity was confirmed only after a check of dental records.

Millsaps, who was a member of Eastside Baptist Church, graduated from Wheeler High School and was actively involved in local softball organizations, according to an MDJ obituary. He is survived by his wife and a daughter.

A passenger in the minivan, Barbara Phenicie, 71, of Peachtree City, was pronounced dead on arrival at WellStar Kennestone Hospital, and five other people were injured.

Husic was taken to Kennestone with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

Pierce said police obtained a warrant for Husic's arrest on Thursday.
