Cobb Prepares for Chattahoochee Flooding

The possible impact areas include Columns Drive and areas around Sope Creek in East Cobb.

Updated, 2:45 p.m. Friday:

Cobb Commissioner Bob Ott issued the following update:

"We continue to monitor water levels along Sope Creek and the Chattahoochee River. Fortunately, during the last 12 hours, rainfall has been light and water levels have not risen. As announced earlier, we have moved an extra fire engine into East Cobb and will be ready to move it into the area of River Heights Apartments if water levels rise enough to impact access. Until that time, it will remain at Fire Station 21 on Lower Roswell Road."

The National Weather Service has extended a flood watch for Cobb, metro Atlanta and most of northwest Georgia until 8 a.m. Sunday.

Original Report, Thursday, July 4, 6 p.m.:

In preparation of the anticipated heavy rainfall in Cobb County over the next few days, Cobb Fire and Emergency Services is warning residents who live on or near the Chattahoochee River and Columns Drive about possible delays of fire protection and emergency medical services due to flooded streets.

This includes those who reside on or near Riverlook Parkway, Riverview Drive, and live in the Atlanta Country Club community. Crews are monitoring the water levels in Sope Creek and the Chattahoochee River, and have planned to stage a fully staffed fire engine in the area in case streets become impassable, according to Cobb officials.

The unit will be located at the clubhouse in the River Heights Apartments complex, and will remain there as long as there is a threat of flooding streets.

The Cobb County Police Department and the Cobb County DOT are assisting the effort. If flooding begins, barricades will be placed at the intersections of River Knoll Drive/Atlanta Country Club Drive and Johnson Ferry Road/Columns Drive and these streets will be closed.

If you need emergency assistance, please call 911.
