Marietta Soldier Killed in Afghanistan Helicopter Crash

Omar Forde, killed in Afghanistan on Tuesday, was a 2004 graduate of Kennesaw Mountain High School.

A Marietta man was one of six U.S. Army soldiers killed in a helicopter crash in southern Afghanistan on Tuesday.

According to to the Associated Press, Sergeant First Class Omar Forde, a 2004 graduate of Kennesaw Mountain High School, was killed when the Black Hawk UH-60 helicopter he was in crashed in Zabul Province during a NATO mission.

The circumstances of the crash are currently under investigation. One person aboard the helicopter survived the crash, the AP reports.

During his days at Kennesaw Mountain, Forde was a member of the football team. His coach at the time Scott Jones tells the Marietta Daily Journal that Forde was was a team leader and role model.

Forde, 28, was a member of the First Infantry Division and was stationed at Fort Riley, KS, before deploying to Afghanistan. His wife, a 2005 graduate of KMHS, and their two children still live at Fort Riley.
