Cobb Qualifying Comes to a Close

The weeklong Cobb qualifying period for candidates wishing to run in the May 20 primary and Nov. 4 general elections came to a close on Friday.

On the Cobb County Board of Commissioners, the seats of Helen Goreham and JoAnn Birrell are up. Goreham, who represents west Cobb, will not seek re-election.

Vying to fill her District 1 seat are Democrat Derrick Crump, and Republicans Angela Barner, Bill Byrne, Glenn Melson, Scott Tucker, and Bob Weatherford.

Birrell is seeking re-election to represent northeast Cobb. She’ll face a pair of fellow Republicans in Michael Opitz and Joseph Pond. No Democrats qualified for the District 3 seat.

Commissioners receive a yearly salary of $42,582, and the qualifying fee was $1,277.

Three of the seven seats on the Cobb Board of Education are up with District 4 member Kathleen Angelucci, who represents north Cobb, not seeking re-election. Republicans David Chastain and Bill Scott have qualified to take her place with no Democrats qualifying for the seat.

Republican Tim Stultz, who represents the Smyrna area of District 2, has two challengers in Jeff Abel and Susan Thayer in the May GOP primary. The winner will face Democrat Kenya Pierre in the November general election.

Scott Sweeney, who represents east Cobb’s District 6, will face fellow Republican Kevin Nicholas.

School board positions pay an annual salary of $19,000, and the qualifying fee was $570.
