The Week Ahead in East Cobb, Jan. 17-23

Cobb MLK celebration, high school sports and a tribute to The Master of Suspense highlight events.

Monday, Jan. 17

Cobb County's official Martin Luther King. Jr. holiday celebration takes place at 10 a.m. at the Cobb Civic Center's Jennie T. Anderson Theatre. All Cobb government offices and Cobb public schools will be closed in observance. 

Tuesday, Jan. 18

The Cobb Board of Commissioners meets at 10 a.m. in a regular meeting rescheduled from last week. 

The special guest at the East Cobb Business Association luncheon meeting is Cobb police Precinct 4 Lt. Destiny Davidson, who will provide an update on crime and safety issues involving local businesses. The event begins at 11:30 a.m. at Hollycrest Hall, 2235 Sewell Mill Road. Cost is $15 for members and $20 for non-members.

In high school basketball, Walton is at Etowah, Wheeler is at Marietta, Pope is at Villa Rica and Walker travels to Mt. Paran. Walton's wrestlers have a dual meet at home against Sprayberry. It's also Senior Night for the Raiders. 

Thursday, Jan. 20

Newly elected District 3 Cobb commissioner JoAnn Birrell will hold a "Retire the Debt" fundraiser to pay off campaign expenses at the Bay Breeze restaurant, 2418 Canton Road, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Friday, Jan. 21

The Cobb County wrestling meet at Sprayberry, which runs through Saturday, will include competitors from Pope, Walton and Wheeler. Walker's wrestlers are participating in the Southeast Prep meet at Holy Innocents'.

The Walton and Wheeler swim teams travel to Athens for the Clarke-Oconee Invitational that concludes on Saturday. 

Wheeler basketball is home against Woodstock while Walton plays Rainier Beach of Seattle in the Marriott Invitational at Norcross. 

Saturday, Jan. 22

The East Cobb Library, 4880 Lower Roswell Road, will begin its Alfred Hitchcock Film Festival with "North by Northwest." The projector starts rolling at 2 p.m. Other films in the series, which concludes in April, include "Rear Window," "Notorious," "Vertigo" and "Dial M for Murder."

Pope's swimmers compete in the Mustang Madness event at the Cobb Aquatic Center, while Walker's swimmers are in the Kennesaw Mountain Invitational at the Mountain View Aquatic Center.

Walton basketball visits Pope, while Wheeler once again is at home to play Centennial. Walker's hoopsters are at home against Excel.
