East Cobb Week in Review, July 3-9

A cyclist's death, CRCT scores and the prospect of tax increases top the headlines.

1. -- Bryan Morgan, 52, died while riding with his son early on the morning of July 4 in Sandy Springs. On Friday, a Douglasville woman and has been charged with second-degree vehicular homicide. 

2. -- Eight East Cobb schools reported scores above the state average in the latest Criterion-Reference Competency Tests. Lower-achieving schools also posted gains in a number of subject areas. 

3. -- The official opening date for the long-awaited new store at Merchant's Walk was announced this week as the redeveloped East Cobb schopping center continues to take shape.

4. -- The 9- and 12-year-old divisions of state Little League tournaments got underway this week at East Cobb's Sewell Park with the home team scoring some early wins in round robin play. 

5. Cobb May Increase Millage Rate -- The Cobb Board of Commissioners scheduled two public hearings for later this month as it prepares to tackle an estimated $33 million in deficits in the proposed fiscal year 2012 budget. Commission chairman Tim Lee, who is running for re-election, has proposed raising the millage rate in order to balance the budget, reduce furlough days and restore services that were cut or reduced to get the FY 2011 budget out of the red.
