Dome-Bound in Triple-Digit Heat

The East Cobb Take Five for Wednesday, Aug. 3.

1. Football practice is underway on one of the hottest weeks of the year, and today's temperature may top them all.

How convenient it is that the Walton Raiders will be able to step inside for a practice.

The Raiders had already scheduled a practice at the Georgia Dome starting at 10 a.m. today to prepare for their Aug. 20 opener against Peachtree Ridge in the Corky Kell Classic.

Tuesday offered tragic reminders of the dangers of practicing in the heat, as two Georgia high school football players died, most likely from heat stroke or heat exhaustion.

Walton, like many teams, schedules early morning practices. Before heading to downtown Atlanta, Walton had a 6 a.m. workout.

This will be a two-a-day kind of day, but with at least a few hours of blessed relief inside.

2. Most kids are interested in squeezing in just a fun few events of a different variety into their summer vacation season. East Cobb Local Voices blogger Brooke Stanchie has put together to entertain and educate your kids, from Zoo Atlanta to the Mayfield Dairy in Braselton, with a "replica" Jersey cow to be milked.

Maybe we're a bit old-school here, but whatever happened to real cows?

3. Here's another option to stay cool and get in some exercise, if you can get up as early as Walton football players: A stroll along Cochran Shoals Park. Another East Cobb Local Voices blogger, Mike Holzknecht, does this quite a lot, and about the mystery man who keeps that quiet refuge looking pristine.

4. Cobb citizens got together Tuesday for National Night Out to learn more about crime prevention and awareness. We'll have a report from the East Cobb observance today.

5. And now, for the Wednesday forecast: Hot, hot, miserably hot, more so than Tuesday and much more than Monday, if you can believe that, with temperatures nearing 100 and a heat index rating between 100-105. Winds 5-15 mph, if you can feel it.

And absolutely sunny all day. Need we say it's another Code Orange day?
