Cobb School Calendar Issue Still Heated

Wrapping up a very busy week in and near East Cobb.

1. -- The Cobb Board of Education voted 4-3 on Thursday to spurn a "balanced" calendar in favor of a "traditional" schedule that will begin on Aug. 15 for the 2011-2012 year. New East Cobb school board member Scott Sweeney, who campaigned for the change, voted yes. Opponents vowed to launch a recall drive for board members  facing re-election in 2012 who voted for the change. 

2. -- Henry Lipps, 59, an Indiana trucker who slammed into several vehicles in a fiery accident on I-75 near Windy Hill Road, was charged with second-degree vehicular homicide after a 6-month-old infant died from critical injuries sustained in the crash. 

3. -- Firefighters putting out a brush fire at the I-75 and Windy Hill interchange discovered the body of a man burned beyond recognition. Cobb police have not been able to identify the victim, and are investigating as a homicide.

4. -- East Cobb commissioner Bob Ott said he is opposed to raising property taxes and dipping into reserve funds to make up for a possible deep budget shortfall later this year. 

5. -- Three of the four Borders stores in Cobb will be closing after the troubled national book retailer filed for bankruptcy and announced it was shuttering around 200 of its 674 stores. The Avenue East Cobb store will remain open.
