Small Business Q & A: Little Quilts

Retail shop serves quilting community with education, materials and supplies.

, located at 1450 Roswell Road in East Cobb, is a trademarked brand of quilt patterns created by local quilters Mary Ellen Von Holt, Alice Berg and Sylvia Johnson.

The trio also design 100 percent cotton fabrics that are inspired by traditional designs and manufactured by Henry Glass & Company.

Von Holt and Berg co-founded the East Cobb Quilters' Guild in 1982.

The trio has also written three books on quilting. "Little Quilts: All Through the House," is the first, and was published by Martingale and Company in 1993.

Von Holt said that the Washington publisher invited the trio to create a book and that their first is sold throughout the world with a large market in Japan and is going strong after more than 30 reprints.

"Patriotic Little Quilts," is the trio's third book, published in 2002. The book was in-progress when 2001 terrorists attacks hit the U.S. The authors sent out email requests for quilters to create gifts to be given to those who lost loved ones in the attacks. 2,300 crafters sent in handmade expressions of fellowship. Some are featured in the book.

The Little Quilts retail store celebrated 13 years in business on Nov. 1. The shop has 10 part-time employees, all sewing enthusiasts, some participate in shows like the International Quilt Festival last ended Sunday in Houston and was sponsored by Quilts, Inc.

Von Holt is hands-on owner of the retail shop in Marietta.

A. It's convenient to where I live.

Q. Why did you choose to open your business in East Cobb?
A. I've been designing quilt patterns and fabrics since 1986 with Alice Berg and Sylvia Johnson, we had a business office near here in an office park.

Q. Why did you pick this kind of business?

A. Love what you do and don't be afraid to work hard.

A. Support small businesses. We offer quality goods and great service.
