Small Business Q&A: Acupuncture and Wellness Center

Dr. Li Hua Shu provides Traditional Chinese Medicine for the sick and injured in East Cobb.

Today is the first day of Chinese year of the Dragon. Each lunar year is symbolized by an animal zodiac that rotates in a 12-year cycle.

Dr. Li Hua Shu was born under the sign of the dragon and looks forward to an exciting year.

Shu explains what he did to celebrate new years when he was living in China.

"On new year's eve, family gathers together. We make dumplings and eat a meal.

"Then everyone in the whole country watches a TV show from CCTV4 in Beijing. It starts about 8 at night and lasts until midnight.

"The show has music, dancing, funny stories. The actors and actresses who are on the show get paid just a little.

"After the show, everybody knows them and wants to see them. When they have a concert they can charge a lot.

"We have a satellite dish and can watch the new year's eve show here.

"In China, the whole country takes off a week. It's a big holiday."

East Cobb will not be celebrating the new lunar year with a long vacation. Neither will Shu.

His one-doctor practice, the , located in an office park across from , treats people looking primarily for acupuncture services.

"Most people don't want to know how the acupuncture works, they just want to feel better."

Shu is a doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine, which is a system of integrated therapies that work to balance a person's energy, or Qi.

"Energy can have deficiency, be blocked or be stagnant."

Acupuncture, Moxibustion, the burning of the herb, Mugwort, and Tui Na, a Chinese medical massage, are Shu's specialties.

He also uses Chinese herbs to treat illnesses as well as ear seeds and cupping methods.

Q. What's the best thing about your job?
A. The best thing about working for yourself is freedom. If you have lots of patients you're busy and work hard and if no patients, you are free to do what you need to.

Q. What is the best thing about East Cobb?
A. The people are nice. Some people come here after taking medication, after surgeries and are tired of Western medicine and want to try something else.

The people here are more opened minded.

Q. Why did you choose to open your business in East Cobb?
A. My house is close. My first office was on Powers Ferry Road. I worked with someone else.

Q. Why did you pick this kind of business?
A. I like to work on people, make them feel good. My grandfather was a doctor in China.

In China, there are two kinds of hospitals, Chinese medicine and Western medicine.

When working in Chinese medicine hospital, must give two diagnosis. One in Chinese medicine and one in Western medicine.

I can write prescriptions in China, but not here.

Q. How long have you been in business?
A. In 1988 I became a doctor in China. I was working there nine years before getting a job here. Fourteen years ago I moved here from China. February will be five years at this location, working for myself.

Q. How did your business get started?
A. I learned about business from my first job here. I wanted to work for myself.

It is much better. After you work for self a few years, you don't want to work for somebody else.
