A Sweet Spot for a Sweet Tooth

Dessert lovers know all about Sugar Cakes Patisserie on the Marietta Square. But the salads and sandwiches are worth a try as well.

is known for its desserts for a reason.

Sugar Cakes has a nice small intimate setting with a French flair. It is clean with smooth wood surfaces topped with white linen and finished off with artfully presented dishes.

The restaurant is conveniently located on the square and makes a great stopping point for dessert and coffee or wine before or after taking in a show at the  or .

Service: The wait at Sugar Cakes wasn't terrible. My food arrived fifteen minutes after I placed my order, and the server had a smile on her face. However, my coffee went empty, and I was never asked if I wanted seconds.

Salad: The balsamic house salad is a pleasing blend of spring mix greens, tomatoes, red onions, toasted almonds, soft cranberries and feta cheese. However, the restaurant's balsamic vinaigrette dressing is nothing special and a bit on the sour side. The salad is $5.95.

Entrees: The French Chicken Salad Croissant is a wonderful blend of chicken salad with lite mayo, celery, tarragon, toasted sliced almonds and grapes. It is served on an airy, freshly baked French butter croissant. Each bite provided a new flavor that left me satisfied until the end of my meal. The tasty sandwich is $6.95 and comes with a side house salad.

The Southern-Style Crab Cakes are a local favorite, or so I was told by the owner. When they arrived, I apprehensively noticed they were round, thin, flat and dark on both sides. When I took a bite, I was less than pleased. My first impression was that the only seasoning involved was salt. A second bite and I was pushing my plate away. The words stringy and nauseating come to mind. Really I should have known better than to order crab cakes somewhere that the main attraction is a chocolate espresso pastry.

These homemade crab cakes are pan seared with lemon butter sauce and served with a house salad and tarter sauce and choice of rice or sweet potato waffle fries for $14.95.

Drink: At the recommendation of my waitress, I had the carmel macchioto. It was an average mix of cream, espresso and a carmel flavor shot for $2.95.

Dessert: The best part about Sugar Cakes is the dessert menu, which features a wide selection of cookies, cupcakes and fine pastries. Shut your eyes if you are on a diet because you will not be able to resist trying at least one of the items behind the counter.

Chocolate carmel tarts, red velvet cake, chocolate banana mouse, black and white chocolate mousse, chocolate raspberry mousse, Manhattan cheese cake, southern pecan tart, tiramisu, hazelnut chocolate mousse, the Mirage and more: I haven't found one I don't like, and I am not big on desserts.

The most popular and owner-recommended choice is the Mirage, a freshly whipped avalanche of chocolate, espresso and cream that made me sigh in content. The layered dessert was light and rich.

The bottom line: Don't go for dinner. Sugar Cakes Patisserie—its purpose is in its name. It's a pastry shop. Get a coffee or a glass of wine, and enjoy a delectable tart, cake or mousse. Given the service and the overall menu, I'd avoid this restaurant as a dinner selection.
