A Soggy Start to July 4th Holiday

Two East Cobb creeks are nearing flood stage and many Independence Day celebrations have been called off.

Independence Day in the East Cobb area will be best spent indoors.

Flash flood weather all day Wednesday has raised at least two creeks near flood stage, and a forecast of continued rain through Friday morning has resulted in postponements or cancellations of most Thursday July 4 activities in the Cobb area.

By mid-afternoon Wednesday, Cobb County government announced that Sope Creek near Lower Roswell Road and Sewell Mill Creek at Roswell Road (East Cobb Park) were both nearing flood stage.

As of 4 p.m., Sope Creek at Lower Roswell had risen to 10.27 feet. That area has a flood stage of 11.68 feet. Sewell Mill Creek, with a flood stage of 11 feet, had risen to 9.61 feet at Roswell Road.

The indicators came from the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration website.

A downed tree shut down Shadowlawn Road near Lower Roswell Road for much of Wednesday, but the debris had been cleared and traffic resumed by late afternoon.

Cobb was under a flash flood warning until 8:45 p.m. Wednesday, and a flash flood watch until 8 a.m. Thursday.

The forecast shows there will be no letting up on the rain for at least another day.

Earlier Wednesday, the Indian Hills Civic Association announced that Thursday's poolside events and its annual fireworks display had been postponed to Sunday.

The City of Marietta cancelled its July 4 parade and will reschedule fireworks for a date to be determined.

The City of Roswell said earlier Wednesday that its Thursday festivities will go on "rain or shine."

No announcement has yet been made about the Peachtree Road Race, an Atlanta July 4 tradition.
