'The Walking Dead' Films in Cumberland Area

Several streets to be closed Monday during shooting of AMC television series.

If you've got business, shopping, dining or other activities in the Cumberland Mall area Monday, you might want to make sure they're still good to go.

That's because several streets in the vicinity of the mall and Cobb Galleria Centre will be closed from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday for to the filming of the AMC television series The Walking Dead.

Among the closures include Cobb Galleria Parkway from Akers Mill Road to Cumberland Boulevard; Riverwood Parkway from Cobb Galleria Parkway to Cobb Parkway; and at Cobb Parkway and Riverwood Parkway.

Commuters will be informed of closures and detours by message boards that will be set up on Cobb Galleria Parkway.

The show, which centers on a sheriff who awakes from a coma only to find himself alone in a world engulfed by a zombie epidemic, has been shooting scenes for its second season in the metro Atlanta area.

The program is rather graphic in nature, as the accompanying video trailer behind the scenes offers a glimpse of what onlookers are likely to see during the shooting. The directors and actors insist it's not gratuitous, but even the painted-on blood and simulated violence—and there's plenty of violence—leaves nothing to the imagination.

This kind of fare isn't my cup of tea, but during last season The Walking Dead was the most highly watched drama series on basic cable by adults ages 18 to 49.
