Weekender: Adopt-a-Thon, "Legally Blonde the Musical"

This weekend get out to the Cobb County Animal Control's Spring Adopt-a-Thon, historic sites in South Cobb, Smyrna and Vinings, "Legally Blonde the Musical" on Marietta Square and the Georgia U.S.A. Ambassador Pageant in Kennesaw.

Young Actors Playhouse (YAP) Presents "Legally Blonde the Musical"

  • When: Friday, May 17 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, May 18 at 7:30 p.m.
  • Where: Theatre in the Square, 11 Whitlock Ave SW, Marietta, GA
  • What: Legally Blonde the Musical is based on the novel Legally Blonde by Amanda Brown. It tells the story of Elle Woods, a sorority girl who enrolls at Harvard Law School to win back her ex-boyfriend Warner. She discovers how her knowledge of the law can help others, and successfully defends exercise queen Brooke Wyndham in a murder trial.

Spring Adopt-a-Thon

  • When: Saturday, May 18, 2013, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Where: Cobb County Animal Control, 1060 Al Bishop Dr SW, Marietta
  • What: Cobb County Animal Control is hosting its Annual Spring Adopt-a-thon. Over 300 dogs and cats have been adopted to forever homes from these special events. There will be vendors, police K9 dog demonstrations, food, a DJ, and raffle prizes. 

Shoupade Park Tours

  • When: Saturday, May 18 at 9 a.m. and 10 a.m.; Sunday, May 19 at 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.
  • Where: Shoupade Park, 4770 Oakdale Rd., Smyrna
  • What: In conjunction with the Cobb Coalition for Historic Preservation's Historic Site Open House celebration, Michael Shaffer, assistant director of Kennesaw State University's Civil War Center, will lead tours of the shoupades located in Shoupade Park.
  • Additional sites open to the public include: Smyrna Memorial Cemetery, Smyrna Museum, First Baptist Church Rock Chapel, Gautschy House (Honeybee Store), Williams Park Neighborhood Tours, Shoupade Park, Historic Mable House, Concord Covered Bridge Historic District: Covered Bridge, Ruff's Mill, the Miller's House and Rock House, Seven Springs Museum, The Southern Quilt Trail, Butner-McTyre General Store, Concord Woolen Mill Ruins, and Coats and Clark Threadmill.

Free Tour - Hooper-Turner Historic Landmark House

  • When: Saturday, May 18 at 11 a.m. and Sunday, May 19 at 12 p.m.
  • Where: 5811 Oakdale Rd SE, Mableton, GA
  • What: The Hooper-Turner House is named after the first two property owners -- influential mid-nineteenth century pioneer families, who settled the surrounding Southeast Cobb County area along the Chattahoochee River. Roberta Cook, The River Line Historic Area Coordinator, and other volunteers will be on site managing the open house.

Georgia U.S.A. Ambassador Pageant

  • When: May 18, 7:15 to 9:15 p.m.
  • Where: Hilton Garden Inn, 895 Cobb Place Blvd NW, Kennesaw, GA 30144
  • What: The U.S.A. Ambassador Pageant is a charity driven pageant that promotes Success through Leadership, Integrity, Character and Confidence. The Georgia State Pageant provides girls and young women from ages 4-25 with a pageant experience.
