Walton Chorus Sings for Braves; Wheeler Swings to Strike Out Cancer

Here's what you need to know to start Aug. 30 in East Cobb.

1. The weather will be a little cooler, a little breezier and a little cloudier today than Monday, according to the National Weather Service. It will be mostly sunny with a high about 90 and a breeze in the afternoon that gusts to 15 mph. Overnight, the low will be around 70. The humidity remains low and the ground dry, so even though there’s not an official fire-threat warning, don’t flick cigarette butts into the brush. For example, there was a minor brush fire overnight near Cumberland Mall, WSB-TV reports.

2. The has called a special meeting for Wednesday at 2 p.m. to hold a public hearing on the proposed fiscal 2012 budget, which goes into effect Oct. 1. Make your arrangements today to take time off to attend the meeting Wednesday; if you can’t make it, East Cobb Patch will have live coverage.

3. The softball team is playing at today at 5:55 p.m. in a 5-AAAAA matchup and will host archrival on Thursday at 5:30, but the girls have a bigger opponent in sight: childhood cancer. The Wheeler Fastpitch Booster Club is organizing the team’s first charity home run derby Sept. 10 at 6 p.m. at Jim Mau Field behind . Registration is $100 per four-member team, and the winning team will get a $200 prize. Team sponsors will get advertising at www.wheelerfastpitch.com. In addition to the big hits, the event will feature food, face painting, T-shirts and other fun. The proceeds will go to Coaches Curing Kids Cancer. 4. The Wheeler volleyball team, coming off a loss to and win over in the home opener Thursday, travels to today to play the Blue Devils at 7 p.m. and at 6 p.m. Walton’s volleyball team warms up for Thursday’s showdown of state champions at by playing Roswell at home at 6:30 tonight. Pope preps for that showdown with a trip to Milton for volleyball games against Milton at 6:30 p.m. and at 7:30. The Pope softball team plays at Sprayberry at 5:30 p.m.

5. If you’re heading down to Turner Field for tonight’s game against the Washington Nationals, or if you plan to watch it on Peachtree TV (Channel 7 on Comcast cable), don’t be late. The Walton chorus is performing the national anthem before the game, which is scheduled for a 7:10 first pitch.
