Vote for Mom; Walton Open House

Here's what you should know to start Aug. 31 in East Cobb.

1. The weather today will be just about normal for the last day of August, mostly sunny with increased humidity and a high of about 89 today, the National Weather Service says. The overnight low will be about 68.

2. The will hear from the public at 2 p.m. today in the boardroom at 100 Cherokee St. about the , which goes into effect Oct. 1. East Cobb Patch will have live coverage of the hearing. If that doesn’t excite you, the last chairman of the county commission, Attorney General Sam Olens, will speak to the East Cobb Civic Association at 7 tonight at the East Cobb Library.

3. It’s open-house night at , starting with a PTSA meeting at 5 p.m.; parents will start their children’s schedules at 6:20. Outside the school, the Walton softball team is playing host to Cherokee in a Region 5-AAAAA game at 5:55. Meanwhile, is hosting a festival of JV volleyball featuring Walton, and in a series of matches starting at 5 p.m. It’s a nice appetizer for Thursday’s big Pope-Walton varsity match at Pope at 6 p.m.

4. There will be an added attraction during football game at this Friday night: Someone could win a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck by throwing a Nerf football. The Cobb Schools Foundation is running the contest with the Credit Union of Georgia and Day’s Chevrolet. According to the rules, one person will get a chance at Friday night’s game to throw the football through a moving truck’s windows in order to win the truck. The contest also will run during Pope’s game at Osborne on Sept. 23.

5. An East Cobb mom is one of three national finalists in the Genesis Today Mommy Makeover Contest, the Marietta Daily Journal reports. Debbie Shetter, 56, will learn Thursday whether she’s the winner of a $5,000 makeover package. The other finalists are from Jacksonville, NC, and Huntington Beach, CA. You can help Shetter win by liking the Genesis Today Facebook page, watching her video and voting for her. As of 5 a.m. today, Shetter held a slight lead. Voting ends at midnight, the MDJ says.
