The Heat Is On

Here's what you need to know to start the day May 9.

1. If you were among those complaining about the chilly May temperatures last week, you should be happy this week. We'll reach the upper 80s every day through Thursday, the National Weather Service says, and we could hit 90 degrees. Today the high will be about 86 degrees. After some fog this morning, the day will be mostly sunny. The overnight low will be about 61.

2. The weather sounds perfect for a round of golf with 1983 U.S. Open champion Larry Nelson, who grew up in Cobb County and went to Kennesaw State back when it was Kennesaw Junior College. Nelson will appear at , a charity event Mount Zion United Methodist Church is holding at today to benefit . Registration starts at 7:30 a.m.; the golf round starts at 10.

3. We had a lot going on in and around East Cobb this weekend, including: locals helping raise more than $670,000 so far for the American Cancer Society at Cobb County's Relay for Life, led by the $23,590 brought in by a team combining and elementary schools; the Taste of East Cobb; and high school sports playoffs, such as and in baseball. We'll have a full roundup of the past few days in high school sports this morning, but here's to East Cobb's latest state champs: the boys tennis team at AAAA and, to no one's surprise, the girls tennis team at AAAAA.

4. They keep meeting, so we keep telling you about it. Fresh off from the county grand jury, the Cobb County Board of Education will meet today at 6 p.m. at the Central Office on Glover Street in a special called meeting. The board will immediately go into executive session for personnel discussions as the hunt for the next Cobb superintendent goes on. The public will have its say at the start of the board's regular work session Wednesday morning at 8:30 at the Central Office.

5. Are you someone who would love to tell the school board a thing or two? Do you wish the county Board of Commissioners, which meets in an agenda work session this morning at 9 and in a regular meeting Tuesday at 9 at 100 Cherokee St. in Marietta, would take the time to listen to you? Are you brimming with ideas and suggestions like intentional budgeting? East Cobb Patch might be looking for you. We want people who have something to say to come here to say it in , set to launch on the home page this week. Email editor Wendy Parker at wendy.parker@patch.com if you'd like our audience to hear you.
