Swimming, Baseball in Summer Heat

Here's what you need to know to start the day June 7.

1. Another day, another Code Orange air-quality alert and another high temperature in the 90s, the National Weather Service reports. Expect a lot of sun and a high around 92 and an overnight low near 66.

2. You can beat the heat at the outdoor swimming pool at Sewell Park. The pool is open from 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday during the summer. A family of four can get a three-month pass for $106, including sales tax, or you can get a day pass for a few dollars.

3. Just a reminder that Woodlawn Road is closed from Lower Roswell Road to Tiger Lilly Way through Aug. 12 for the installation of a waterline. Looking ahead a few days, Old Canton Road will be closed Friday through Sunday between Sewell Mill and Roswell roads. Maybe that sinkhole finally will disappear.

4. It's the first Tuesday of the month, which means you can start and end your day with county government meetings. The Planning Commission meets at 9 a.m. at the Board of Commissioners' meeting room at 100 Cherokee St. just off Marietta Square, and the Keep Cobb Beautiful board meets at 5:30 p.m. at the Cobb Water Lab, 660 South Cobb Drive, Marietta. The most interesting nearby item on the planning agenda is Unity North Atlanta Church's request for a land use permit for a child care center in Northeast Cobb at Sandy Plains and North Mountain roads.

5. Today could be life-changing for East Cobb baseball players as the Major League Baseball draft continues with Rounds 2 to 30. No East Cobb players were drafted Monday night in the first and supplementary rounds, but players such as Georgia Tech pitcher Mark Pope, a grad, are likely to go today. You can follow the action live online starting at noon. Want a glimpse of players 10 or 11 years from the draft? Check out Monday's webcast of the East Marietta National Little League's 7-8 Blue All-Stars against the Milford Red team in Smyrna.
