Susan Hampton Named East Cobb Citizen of the Year

The banking official's most recent community effort was organizing an appreciation dinner for local law enforcement.

Susan Hampton had just wrapped up a presentation about her most recent community project Wednesday morning when East Cobb business and civic leaders called her back up to the front of the room.

By day, Hampton is a vice president at the Fidelity Bank branch on Johnson Ferry Road. But to many in East Cobb, she's a tireless volunteer for a number of community projects, from education to last month's appreciation dinner for law enforcement

And that's why she was named the 2013 East Cobb Citizen of the Year at a breakfast of the East Cobb Area Council of the Cobb Chamber of Commerce at the Indian Hills Country Club.

Fighting back tears of joy, Hampton was like many of her predecessors -- genuinely surprised by the honor.

The messages of congratulations included a video salute from her son Rob, a Pope High School graduate who was out of town on Wednesday on business.

Hampton is the co-chair of a group formed recently by the East Cobb Business Association to raise money for the dinner for Cobb Police Precinct 4 personnel and their families.

The group also has raised funds and will stage a similar dinner for the Cobb County Fire Department in February.

Her civic activism dates back for most of the 25 years she's lived in East Cobb.

Hampton is a longtime member and officer of the East Cobb Lions Club, has advocated for schools, including a character education program at Pope, and has been involved in Meals on Wheels and My Sister's Closet of the YWCA.

The accompanying video includes Hampton's surprise at the honor, a quick intereview with East Cobb Patch and meeting with Cynthia Rozzo, publisher of the EAST COBBER and the 2011 East Cobb Citizen of the Year.
