Summer Weather and a Sinkhole

1. Today will be summerlike in East Cobb, according to the National Weather Service. After some patchy fog in the morning, the high rise to about 89, and we'll see a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms between 2 and 8 p.m. The overnight low will be about 64.

2. Reports of a massive sinkhole on Roswell Road at Old Canton Road were greatly exaggerated this morning. WSB-TV initially reported that a 20-by-20-foot sinkhole opened up on Roswell Road and shut down traffic there. Instead, a hole with about a 3-foot diameter appeared in the crosswalk in the right-turn lane from southbound Old Canton onto westbound Roswell, and a Cobb County road crew blocked off a 20-by-20-foot area on Old Canton while awaiting repairs. The hole shouldn't cause more than rubberneck delays on Roswell Road. If you want to be safe and bypass that stretch, take Robinson Road, which intersects Roswell by Rick's Farmers Market in the east and in the west, or Sewell Mill Road, accessible from Johnson Ferry Road on the east end and from East Piedmont Road or Roswell Road near to the west.

3. girls play for spots in two state AAAAA GHSA championship games tonight. The soccer team is at home at 7:30 against , and the lacrosse team is at at 7.

After all the excitement with the budget last month, today's agenda is light. The most interesting, or at least tastiest, item for East Cobb is probably the approval of an alcohol service license for a new Chicago-style pizza parlor, Aurilio's Is Pizza, in the same strip center as , and Empress of China II, among others that serve alcohol. Owner Paul Vitt's application originally was turned down March 17 because of the proximity of homes, but the License Review Board heard his appeal April 21 and unanimously recommended approval. Vitt's argument included evidence that other alcohol-serving restaurants haven't hurt property values or otherwise harmed nearby homes.

5. If you've been curious about the county's Citizen Oversight Committee, tonight's your chance to learn more and contribute to its efforts. The committee is meeting at the Jennie T. Anderson Theatre at the Cobb Civic Center from 7 to 8:30 to hear public comments about county government operations. The committee plans to consider that feedback while preparing the recommendations it will present to the Board of Commissioners on June 28.
