State Fair Starts; Brumby Tutors Needed

Here's what you should know to start Sept. 22 in East Cobb.

1. Expect rain, clouds and heat on this final day of summer, the National Weather Service says. There’s a 70 percent chance of rain, lingering all day and night, and the storms could be severe at times. The high will be about 80, and the overnight low will be around 65.

2. The PTSA’s Community Outreach program is launching a tutoring program at the week of Oct. 3 and needs adult volunteers to work with children individually and in groups. The greatest need is in kindergarten through second grade. If you can help, contact Lisa Erickson a l_erickson@yahoo.com and let her know what day or days you can volunteer, what time, how long, how often and which grade you prefer.

3. had a strong start to the defense of its Cobb County volleyball title Wednesday, the Marietta Daily Journal reports, defeating , and in pool play at home. 4. Congratulations to East Cobb’s Brenda Pictor for her great performance in the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur. Pictor, who had the lowest stroke-play score to earn medalist honors in the tournament in Virginia Beach, won her third-round match at the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur, 2-up, but was knocked out of the golf championship with a 7-and-5 loss to three-time champion Ellen Port of St. Louis in the quarterfinals Wednesday.
